Saturday, April 19th, 2003 - no task, too strong wind

No task today because of the wind.

Friday, April 18th, 2003 - 4th Task

A 50km task is started with a crossing of the Rhone valley and a goal in Zinal like on the 2nd task.

It was a real show to see pilots taking off on both sides of the launch area. The wind was still weak and some still got troubles to launch. After the start, many pilot start to cross the valley but without enough altitude, and many have to land before reaching the other side. 67 pilots manage to reach goal.

Norman Lausch (D) is the first in goal.Steve Cox (CH) is second, and Nikolay Shorokhov (R) is just behind. Petra Krausova (CZ) is again the first woman in goal. She is followed by Nicole Nussbaum (CH) and Caroll Licini (CH).

Steve Cox now leads the competition. Stephan Morgenthaler (CH) is second and Norman Lausch third. In the women competition results, Petra Krausova is still ahead, with Elisabeth Rauchenberger second and Nicole Nussbaum third.

Alex Hofer (CH) still leads the World Cup ranking, with Martin Orlik (CZ) second and Stephan Morgenthaler third. The women World Cup ranking sees Petra Krausova in first place, followed by Elisabeth Rauchenberger and Caroline Brille (F).

Thursday, April 17th, 2003 - 3rd Task

The weather report is announcing a strong north-east wind during the day.The task committee decides a "short" task of 75km. The take-off is Bellalui, over Crans Montana, and the first turnpoint is going east 18km, followed by a first crossing of the Rhone valley, in the direction of the Turtmana valley. In this little typical snowy swiss valley, pilots go the lake at the end of the valley then come back. On the way, they enjoy the view on the Turtmana Glacier.

For the pilots landing in this area (like Hans Bollinger !), they enjoy a nice walk as the road is closed because of the snow. For the others, they cross the Rhone valley again and find strong conditions on the other side. Some pilots reports 11 m/s thermals !

The last 17km to goal are made in a straight line. Stefan Wyss (CH) who previously won a competition in this area last year wins again today, with 1'30" ahead of Alex Hofer (CH) and Christian Tamegger (A). It is a good reward for Stefan as he has been leading all the task since the first turnpoint. Stefan is a tandem pilot in Interlaken and he has already won previously 2 tasks in Chamonix 2000 World Cup and in Sierra Nevada during the famous 254km task where he reached 197.3km !

In this typically "male" conditions, Petra Krausova (CZ) is winning with just 19 minutes behind Stefan. Elisabeth Rauchenberger (CH) is second and Karin Appenzeller (CH) is third.

Christian Tamegger (A) is now leading the competition. He is followed by Stefan Wyss (CH) and Steve Cox (CH). For the women, Petra Krausova is leading and followed by Elisabeth Rauchenberger and Caroline Brille.

Alex Hofex is now leading the World Cup ranking and is followed by Stefan Wyss and Scotty Marion (USA). For the women, the World Cup ranking is unchanged with Petra Krausova in first place, followed by Elisabeth Rauchenberger and Caroline Brille (F).

Wednesday, April 16th, 2003 - task cancelled

A task is started but the wind forces to cancel it.

Tuesday, April 15th, 2003 - 2nd Task

All the pilots and organization is moving today on the other side of the Rhone valley, in the Chandolin sky area, at the entrance of the Zinal Valley. This valley is well protected from the Foehn.

After moving to the take-off by cable car, pilots are waiting a couple of hours for the wind to blow in the right direction.

A 62km task is chosen, with 4 turnpoints and a goal in Zinal. The wind stays very weak, a big change compared to the first day where the wind was really strong at take-off. At window closing time, the wind blows almost regularly from the back, the window is extended, but even then, some pilots do not manage to launch.

The others can enjoy a wonderfull view on the high mountains like the Cervin. Strong thermals allows to finish the race in less than 2 hours.

Alex Hofer (CH) is the first to reach goal, followed by Stefan Morgenthaler (CH) and Achim Joos (D). Petra Krausova (CZ) is the first women in goal, followed by Caroline Brille (F) and Elisabeth Rauchanberger (CH).

Stefan Morgenthaler is now leading the competition, Martin Brunn (A) is second and Steve Cox (CH) third. For the women competition result, Petra Krausova is leading, Elisabeth Rauchenberger is second and Caroline Brille third.

Scotty Marion (USA) now leads the World Cup ranking, followed by Alex Hofer and René Hauser (CH). Petra Krausova is still leading the women World Cup ranking, she is followed by Elisabeth Rauchanberger and Caroline Brille.

Monday, April 14th, 2003 - no task

The Foehn is blowing on the swiss alps. The wind is too strong to fly so we will have no task today.

Tomorrow, we will move to the Chandolin take-off, on the other side of the valley.

Sunday, April 13th, 2003 - First Task

The weather was very shiny this first day in Crans Montana. Arriving at the take off at 3000m, the wind was so strong we thought we couldn't fly. But at 12:30, the wind decreased, and a task was launched.

The pilot took off for a short 50 km long race to goal. It was a very classical task, out and return east and west from the take off.

To win a task in such thermal conditions, you need to be strong in your head, not to turn to much, to go fast and to choose the right way along the mountains.

Once again, quite a lot of pilots reached the goal on the golf of Crans Montana.

René Hauser (CH) is winning the task, followed by Stephan Morgenthaler (CH) and Roman Fleisch (A). For the women, Nicole Nussbaum (CH) is winning, she is followed by Elisabeth Rauchenberger (CH) and Petra Krausova (CZ).
