On the last day, the conditions are looking perfect for big distances. But, as the results must be finished in the evening, a short task is set with a
goal before Avila, 53.5 km from the take off. 104 pilots are in goal with the top 25 flying the distance from the startpoint in less than 1 hour.Manuele
"startpoint" Dondi is the fastest just before Andy Hediger and, again, Jimmy Pacher. Louise Crandall is the fastest woman, 10 mn before
Sandie Cochepain, Petra Krausova, Tilde Fanciulli and Senko Koyama.

The final result is almost the same as in the Europeans last year. In 98, the ranking was Pacher, L¸thi, Henny, Bollinger. This year it is P. L¸thi,
H. Bollinger, K.Henny, J. Pacher ! The swiss team cleaned it up !

Hans Bollinger is a great believer

Hans wins the task !!

He make a low point 15m from the ground
in the middle of nowhere....

So he's praying at landing !

Another task, another take off. With south wind everybody is going to the beautiful village of Lastra del Cano. The wind is quite strong but slightly dropping and allowing a task of 73 km. As the take off is little, a clockstart startpoint is used, 10 km from take off with 2 possibilities. The fist leg is very fast. With cloudbase at 3500 m and wind, the pilots can read ground speed over 70 km/h on their GPS. The problem is that the last turnpoint is in front of the wind. From the leading gaggle only a few pilots can make it.Valery Montand, a french pilot is first in goal, but the next pilots who choosed the second startpoint, are finally faster. Peter L¸thi is the winner for the second time !20 pilots are reaching goal but no women. For the first validated task using the air clockstart the tactic payed. The swiss faked an early start but came back to use the second timing.
It worked !

Thursday, 29/08/99

At one o'clock, Piedrahita is under cirrus and it looks difficult to make a big task. Nevertheless the task committee is betting on improval and setting a 110 km out and return to Avila. And it works ! A big gaggle is slowly going up at the beginning and finally going over the pass of Villatorro, 16 km from take off. Then is the flatlands going to Avila the pilots are faster. As the leading gaggle is making his way back to Piedrahita, a big cloud is developping over the turnpoint where half of the field is still arriving. With a dark sky, such a big cloud and some thunder, the meet director and myself, as the technical delegate, we decide together to cancelled the task. The problem is that a lot of pilots dont have radios and the others have turned it off because of a pilot emitting constantly on the safety channel. We managed to contact some pilots on the rescue safety channel. As they go down with big ears, the other pilots are turning their radios on and , as we repeat the message constantly, are finally informed of the cancellation. Talking about safety, the problem of pilots flying without radios (mainly swiss and germans because of their national laws) is one more thing to improve. The safety is not only the gliders like everybody is focusing on.Finally, the leading pilots are reaching Piedrahita, safely, as they are far from the dangerous area. The others are landing. It could have been a wonderful task. It's not finished. The conditions are looking perfect for the last days.

Due to bad weather conditions no task could have been run on Tuesday July the 27th.

Wednesday, 28/07/99 :

As the forecast for wind was quiete strong, the meet Director (Steve Ham) decided a "Race to Goal" staying in the area of Piedrahita. Take off at Pena Negra at 12h50, then a TP0 at "Corrals" and the start point at "Chalet" at 13h40. Pilots then had to fly to TP 1 "Hoyorredondo church", then to TP2 "Bonilla Church", and back to TP3 "Hoyorredondo church", and TP4 "Piedrahita bull ring" with a goal in Piedrahita. 81 pilots flew the 63 KM of this task

The wind drop later so the 81 pilots reached goal and enjoyed the task. The swiss team cleaned it up taking the 4 first places, Peter L¸thi, the 98 PWC overall w

inner arrived first at goal followed by the "old boy" Hans Bollinger.

The Danish Louise Crandal and the Tchech Petra Krausova are the only women in goal.

Another good thing is the come back of Sebastien Bourquin, as a member of the Swiss team and he also made goal.
The weather forecast is quiete optimistic for the rest of the week. The competition will finish on Sunday evening.
