Last ride and landing...
13/08/99
Cloudbase is still very low, but is the last chance to run a
second task.
Albert Baud, the meet director plan the only credible task according
to the conditions.
TP0 : Avoriaz swimming pool
Start : Morzine landing field
TP1 : Avoriaz swimming pool
TP2 : Restaurant (inbetween skilift station, Mt Chery)
TP3 : Nyon's mount restaurant
Goal : Morzine landing field
Total : 37.8 km
The Avoriaz swimming pool was hard to turn and makes big time
differences at the beginning of the task.
After the turnpoint one a group of 15 pilots is riding to les Gets,
but it's the night here (because of the clouds), most of them are
landing, only two are staying in the air.
They anyway loose the task because of the high altitude of the
followers : using the cloudbase in a better way..... they could come
with at least 300 m more.
Some of this second group were able to turn TP2 in a direct glide.
Hans Bollinger, made a really beautiful race : getting out of a low
point just after Mt Chery's TP, he rides alone to the next TP and
then to the goal. A few minutes after him, it's a whole herd of
pilots that race for the rank.
Hans is now second in PWC
ranking
At the end : a very interesting task that once again makes the PWC
in front of the technical managing problems :
Can we still fly in such low base day's ? What is the limit of beeing
in or out of a clouds ? Do we need to validate all non-dangerous task
even if their sportive validity is poor ?
Bruce Goldsmith is winning in serial class
under his Proton

Morzine task 2 (PWC task 15) |
12/08/99
A rainy day, no task are planed
11/08/99
Maybe due of the Eclipse, the sun was not strong enough to blow
the low clouds.
After a briefing at the top of "Mont Chery" the task was finally
canceled and the concurent made a free flight to Morzine landing.
10/08/99
After the first task cancellation, pilots had to wait for Tuesday for the real start of the competition.
Wind was coming W/NW and was a little strong at the beginning of
the task but decreasing during the afternoon.
Take off at "Mont Chery" in les Gets, the 110 involved pilots runed a
48km race to goal.
After a classic but tricky start in Avoriaz, the task took the form
of a "Go and return" between the "col du Corbier" and Avoriaz. Then,
the last difficultie was a turnpoint under Nyon's mountain before the
final glide.
Low cloudbase and change of wind direction made the race hard
especially at the end.
The last kilometers where very spectacular for the audience at
landind field.
The leading group loosed the opportunities to win the task
because of their low altitude.
The following pilots tried to cut through the middle of the valley to
reach directly the last turnpoint... without any success !
Then a gaggle formed in front of the last TP. These highest pilots
were trying to get even more altitude, some others who were lower
took the risk to leave and this was the good option. Because of the
last TP position, the final glide was very high and the first pilots
flew it very fast.
This pilot is Jean-Marc Caron, a sparkling french pilots who crossed
the line at the first position beating Jimmy Pacher for five seconds.
This task was also, from a certain point of view, an historical
one :
the GPS was used as evidence to check FAI sectors. The aim is to
validate a new evidence protocol to use during the 2000 season.
