* Why do we accept some models only as backups ?

It is mainly for practical reasons.

Some models require special cables and protocols and it takes time to switch cables and protocols.

In order to keep the GPS control being fast enough, it is not a good idea to have to switch when pilots are queuing.

The other reason is that some manufacturers are using their own proprietary protocols and sometimes changing them without informing us at all. Some software revision may also contain bugs preventing GPS control to be done (this has been the case several time with the Galileo/Compeo, and this is why we have to publish which software version has been tested and proved to work properly). If this happens, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to check the flight using these equipments.

We are trying to standardize as much as possible all the equipments. At least 5 manufacturers are now complying with the MLR protocol introduced by MLR with their SP24XC after working with us on it. These manufacturers are: MLR, Ruag (LogIt), Renschler and 2 new dataloggers.

We expect more manufacturers to comply with the MLR protocol in the future.
